Right now in Sonoma the fruit trees are in blossom. It’s a joy to see new life emerging after the long winter. This april, rather than write an essay, I want to share my bliss with you with as few words as possible.

I have recently discovered the art of botanical illustration. It is a beautiful blend of science, love of all life and astounding beauty. Above is a photo of a watercolor painting by Mieko Ishikawa, one of Japan’s most prominent botanical artists. In this painting the artist has captured the grace of blossoms. The placement of each line, the colors and the attention to detail show us, directly and without words, what a very present mind looks like. Botanical illustration is more than just a beautiful picture. It is a snap shot of a truly felt moment.

I only experience beauty when I am present in the moment. This watercolor reminds me of what presence looks like and why it is worth cultivating. I invite you to turn off your TV, go to a museum, walk in nature and remember what is good about this planet.
